About this position

This PhD project at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) explores dynamic space–time interfaces for high-speed THz beam control. The work sits at the intersection of photonics, electromagnetics, structured waves, nanofabrication, and experimental terahertz systems, with a strong focus on the emerging sub-THz regime (approximately 0.3–1 THz).

You will investigate what becomes possible when a THz interface changes while the wave is interacting with it. The project aims to develop dynamically modulated interfaces that can enable frequency conversion, beam steering, anomalous scattering, and nonreciprocal propagation. A major goal is to demonstrate GHz-rate two-dimensional spatiotemporal beamforming for future reconfigurable and nonreciprocal THz communication.

Your research will cover the full pipeline from concept development and electromagnetic modelling to device fabrication and THz experiments. Specific activities include designing fast spatial and temporal modulation schemes, modelling wave interactions with time-varying interfaces, exploring MEMS-based and alternative dynamic platforms, fabricating and characterizing devices, and building experiments to measure beam steering, frequency shifts, and nonreciprocal response.

The position is part of SPARK – Spatiotemporal Photonic Technologies, a Marie Skłodowska-Curie Actions Doctoral Network funded by the European Union under Horizon Europe. You will be based at TU/e in the Photonics and Semiconductor Nanophysics (PSN) group, and will also spend time at the Université de Namur for theoretical modelling and at TNO for THz mode (de)multiplexing and system-level characterization. The role includes participation in network-wide training schools, workshops, conferences, and collaborative activities.

Applicants should hold a relevant master’s degree and have a strong foundation in electromagnetics, wave physics, microwave/THz engineering, and/or photonics. Experience with numerical modelling or scientific programming is beneficial, as is interest in dynamic electromagnetic systems, metasurfaces, MEMS, RF/microwave systems, and experimental wave characterization. Strong English communication skills are required. The project values curiosity, a solid technical background, and willingness to learn new methods during the PhD.

Employment is for four years full-time, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. The salary follows Dutch university scale P and includes holiday allowance, year-end bonus, pension benefits, leave provisions, training opportunities, and support for international staff. A Master’s degree in Applied Physics, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Optics/Photonics, Microsystems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field is required. Applicants should have a strong foundation in electromagnetics, wave physics, microwave/THz engineering, and/or photonics, along with experience in numerical modelling or scientific programming such as Python, MATLAB, COMSOL, CST, Ansys, or similar tools. Interest or experience in dynamic electromagnetic systems, THz technology, metasurfaces, MEMS, RF/microwave systems, or experimental wave characterization is desirable. Strong written and spoken English is required. Experience with THz measurements, RF/microwave systems, microfabrication, MEMS, time-varying electromagnetics, or electromechanical modelling is an advantage but not mandatory. MSCA eligibility applies: candidates must not already hold a doctoral degree and must satisfy the mobility rule of not having resided or carried out their main activity in the Netherlands for more than 12 months in the 36 months before recruitment.
