About this position

CNRS is advertising a PhD position at the Institut Charles Gerhardt Montpellier in France on materials science, electrochemistry, solid-state chemistry, and Li-ion batteries.

The thesis topic is “New strategies based on insertion oxides for high-power Li-ion battery negative electrodes.” The project addresses fast-charging and safety limitations of graphite anodes by studying niobium-based Wadsley–Roth structured oxides and related insertion oxides. Research directions include composite electrodes to improve mechanical relaxation and cycling stability, and thick self-standing electrodes fabricated by Spark Plasma Sintering (SPS) to increase volumetric energy density.

The work will be carried out in collaboration between ICGM in Montpellier and LRCS in Amiens within the RS2E electrochemical energy storage network. The candidate will be enrolled in the Doctoral School of Balard Chemical Sciences at the University of Montpellier. Experimental work includes material synthesis, electrode formulation, electrochemical testing, operando X-ray diffraction, and possibly synchrotron experiments at ALBA (Spain).

Eligibility: applicants must hold a Master’s degree or equivalent in inorganic materials science, solid-state chemistry, or electrochemistry applied to batteries. Helpful skills include cell assembly, impedance spectroscopy, solid-state synthesis, XRD/structural analysis, and data processing with Python or Matlab.

Funding: 36-month PhD contract with a salary of 2300 € gross per month. The offer also mentions annual leave/RTT and transport support.

Deadline: 7 October 2026 at 23:59.
