About this position

Linköping University is recruiting a PhD student in Ionic Thermoelectrics and Electrochemistry for Thermal Energy Harvesting at the Department of Science and Technology, Campus Norrköping, Sweden.

The position is part of the ERC Starting Grant project HEAT-BRIDGE (High-Efficiency Thermal Energy Harvesting via Ionic Thermoelectric–Electronic Bridging), which aims to convert low-grade heat into electricity using ionic thermoelectrics, electrochemistry, mixed ionic–electronic materials, and soft electronics. The research combines fundamental materials science, transport phenomena, advanced functional materials, and deformable energy-harvesting devices.

The doctoral researcher will work on quasi-solid-state ionic thermoelectric materials, polymer-based gel electrolytes, ion–polymer interactions, ionic transport, redox-active materials, and the integration of these materials into soft thermal energy-harvesting devices. The project also includes device fabrication, characterization, optimization, scalable multi-cell fabrication, and validation using representative low-grade heat sources.

Required qualifications include a Master’s degree in Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Materials Science, Chemical Engineering, or a closely related field, or equivalent coursework/knowledge. Applicants should have a strong background in electrochemistry and electrochemical materials or devices, hands-on experimental experience, and strong English communication skills. Experience with electrolytes, hydrogels, ionogels, eutectogels, redox chemistry, batteries, ion transport, cyclic voltammetry, electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, ionic thermoelectrics, and flexible electrochemical devices is considered meritorious.

The successful candidate will be supervised by Asst. Prof. Nara Kim at the Laboratory of Organic Electronics (LOE), Linköping University. LOE is an international and collaborative environment with extensive facilities for materials synthesis, characterization, device fabrication, cleanroom processing, printing, and additive manufacturing.

The employment is normally for four years full-time, with possible extension up to five years depending on teaching and departmental duties. The starting salary is currently SEK 35,300 per month. The start date is February–March 2027, or by agreement.
