About this position

Umeå University is advertising a fully funded PhD position in Mathematics at the Department of Mathematics and Mathematical Statistics, with a research focus on combinatorics, group theory, and geometry.

The project explores theoretical questions at the intersection of combinatorics, algebra, incidence geometry, matroid theory, geometric group theory, and rigidity theory. The exact direction will be developed together with the successful candidate, who will have room to shape the project within its mathematical framework. The student will join an active research environment in discrete mathematics, geometry, and algebra, with opportunities for conference travel, research visits, and international collaboration.

This is a PhD opening intended to lead to a doctoral degree. The appointment is for four years full-time, or up to five years if teaching part-time. Teaching or other departmental duties may make up to 20% of the post. Salary follows Umeå University’s PhD salary ladder.

Eligibility: applicants need a second-cycle degree or at least 240 ECTS credits, including at least 60 ECTS at second-cycle level. For Mathematics, the specific requirement is at least 60 ECTS credits in mathematics, including at least 15 ECTS at second-cycle level, or equivalent knowledge. Strong English skills are required. Experience in the listed mathematical areas is helpful but not mandatory.

Application deadline: 31 August 2026. Apply through the university recruitment system and include a cover letter, CV, degree certificates and transcripts, relevant thesis or articles, GRE/GMAT and TOEFL/IELTS scores if available, and contact details for at least two references.

Funding details

Full funding including tuition fees and living expenses is available for this position. The scholarship covers all educational costs and provides a monthly stipend.
