About this position
University of Bath is advertising a PhD studentship in Mechanical Engineering on embodied supply chain risk, carbon accounting, and climate resilience.
The project aims to help organisations identify hotspots of potential disruption in upstream supply chains by leveraging methods and data from organisational carbon accounting. It focuses on combining spend-based emissions factors, input-output analysis (IOA), and risk factors such as flooding and heat damage to build a screening framework for embodied risk.
The research is expected to involve three main strands: sourcing and refining direct organisational and geographical risk factors; developing a risk-propagation framework based on IOA or related theoretical adaptations; and testing/validating the resulting datasets using historic disruption events and engagement with organisations. A carbon footprinting consultancy has expressed interest in helping test practical use and possible software integration.
Eligibility: applicants should ideally have experience with LCA or IOA and/or strong dataset analysis skills. You must have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 1st or 2.1 level, or an international equivalent. A master’s qualification would be advantageous. Non-UK applicants not currently studying in the UK must meet the English language requirement before the deadline.
Funding: the studentship covers tuition fees, includes a £1,000 per annum training support fee, and provides a maintenance stipend of £21,805 (2026/27 rate). Home and Overseas students may be considered, though Overseas places are capped under UKRI policy. International students must cover visa and Immigration Health Surcharge costs themselves.
Application: apply via the University of Bath online application form for a PhD in Mechanical Engineering. Enter the project title and lead supervisor name exactly as instructed, and select University of Bath URSA in the funding section. The expected start date is 04 October 2027, with an alternative start date possible by agreement.
