About this position
University of Bath, Department of Architecture & Civil Engineering, is advertising a competition-funded PhD studentship on combined effect of ventilation design and operation parameters on local ventilation effectiveness in single-zone naturally ventilated spaces.
The project focuses on natural ventilation, ventilation effectiveness, indoor air quality, energy efficiency in buildings, and indoor airborne disease transmission. It aims to understand how parameters such as window layout, effective opening area, room depth, internal heat gain distribution, and supply air flow rate interact to affect local ventilation effectiveness (LVE). The research will use computational fluid dynamics and machine learning to develop a practical analytical model for ventilation designers and operators.
This PhD is part of a set of studentships in the Faculty of Engineering and Design. If successful, the expected start date is 04 October 2027, with an alternative start date possible by agreement with the supervisors and Doctoral College.
Eligibility: applicants should have, or be about to obtain, a UK Honours degree at 1st or 2.1 level or international equivalent. A master’s degree would be advantageous. Prior experience with finite volume CFD (preferably ANSYS) and machine learning is desirable but not essential. Non-UK applicants not currently studying in the UK must meet the English language requirement before the deadline.
Funding: tuition fees are covered, plus a £1,000 per annum training support fee and a maintenance stipend of £21,805 (2026/27 rate). Overseas students are eligible, but numbers are capped; international students must self-fund the Student visa and Immigration Health Surcharge.
How to apply: submit a formal application via the University of Bath online form for a PhD in Civil Engineering. Quote the project title and Dr Murat Mustafa as intended supervisor, and select University of Bath URSA under Funding Your Studies. Applicants may apply for up to two PhD projects on this programme.
