PhD in Mechanochromic Paper Materials and Polymer Chemistry at University of Freiburg University of Freiburg in Germany

The Calvino Group at the University of Freiburg is recruiting for a PhD position in polymer chemistry, materials science, and functional paper materials.

The project focuses on mechanochromic paper and self-reporting materials for visualizing stress distribution in paper structures. The successful candidate will work on integrating molecular stress sensors into paper fibers and translating molecular-scale events into optical signals that reveal stress accumulation and damage before failure. The research spans mechanochemistry, molecular stress sensing, cellulose chemistry, paper engineering, and responsive material design.

The group’s broader research theme is stimuli-responsive and sustainable polymer materials, including systems that can sense, report, adapt, repair, or disassemble in response to external stimuli. The project is embedded in the Collaborative Research Center Future Paper, coordinated by TU Darmstadt, with scientific exchange and collaboration across the consortium.

Eligibility highlights: applicants should hold a master’s degree in chemistry, polymer science, materials science, or a related field. Experience in organic and/or polymer synthesis and standard characterization methods such as NMR, IR, UV-Vis, and fluorescence is expected. Experience with microscopy, cellulose chemistry, paper science, or mechanical characterization is beneficial. Strong English communication skills and a collaborative mindset are required.
