PhD opportunity at the University of Liverpool in Digital and Experimental Mechanochemistry for Next-Generation Elastomers.

This project sits at the interface of polymer chemistry, polymer science, mechanochemistry, computational chemistry, and materials science. You will study how engineering elastomers degrade under extreme thermomechanical loading by combining a multiscale computational workflow with targeted experimental characterisation. Computational work involves established automated workflows and scripting to support data-driven materials research.

The project is hosted in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Liverpool, within the EPSRC Centre for Doctoral Training in Digital and Automated Materials Chemistry and the Materials Innovation Factory. The project also includes industrial collaboration with Michelin, giving access to specialist instrumentation and industrial research infrastructure alongside university-based doctoral training.

Supervision is by Prof Roman Boulatov (University of Liverpool) and Dr Marc Couty (Michelin). The post is suitable for candidates with a background in chemistry, polymer science, chemical engineering, polymer physics, or a related discipline, especially those interested in mechanochemistry, digital materials chemistry, and computational modelling.

Funding: full home tuition fees plus a 4-year maintenance grant at the UKRI minimum (£21,805 for 2026-27), with a Research Training Support Grant for consumables and conference attendance. International applicants may apply, and some fee-difference scholarships may be available for outstanding candidates.
