About this position

IBEC (Institute for Bioengineering of Catalonia) in Barcelona is recruiting a PhD student for the Enzyme Sensors and Chemical Probes research group working on Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, and metalloenzymes. The project is part of CHEMTUBIO (ERC Starting Grant) and focuses on dissecting post-translational modifications (PTMs) across the microtubule network by developing new inhibitors and fluorescent sensors of metalloenzymes.

The research combines synthetic organic chemistry, peptide-based inhibitor design, enzyme assay development, and live-cell imaging. The successful candidate will work with small molecules and peptides, purified recombinant proteins, and cell culture systems to study the spatiotemporal regulation of microtubule PTMs and support translational drug discovery efforts.

Eligibility highlights: an M.Sc. in Medicinal Chemistry, Chemical Biology, Biochemistry, or a related field; demonstrated expertise in organic chemistry and/or biochemistry; strong English communication; teamwork and collaboration; time management; and motivation for interdisciplinary research. Helpful experience includes solid-phase peptide synthesis, compound library synthesis, in vitro enzyme assays, and international research experience.

Funding and conditions: full-time, 3-year doctoral contract. IBEC offers training activities, seminars, transferable-skills courses, mobility grants, mentoring, and support for foreigners with visa/work-permit procedures and relocation to Barcelona. The post does not state a stipend amount.

Application window: apply online through the IBEC careers portal by 2026-10-30. Reference: PhD2-CM. Contact [email protected] for application questions.
