About this position

Amsterdam UMC is recruiting a PhD/Doctoral Candidate for the MERIT EU-funded MSCA training programme on metabolic footprint in human enterovirus infections along the gut-brain axis.

The project is based in the OrganoVIR Labs at Amsterdam UMC (location AMC) and is supervised by Dr. Katja Wolthers, Dr. Adithya Sridhar, and coordinated within MERIT by Prof. Dr. Dasja Pajkrt. The research focuses on how enteroviruses reshape host metabolism and immune responses, with emphasis on gut and brain organoids, immunocompetent and immunodeficient patient-derived organoids, integrative omics, and genome-scale metabolic modelling.

The doctoral candidate will work on Work Packages 1 and 3, studying metabolic changes during infection with enteroviruses belonging to species B and C, comparing host responses across organoid models, and integrating omics data with metabolic modelling. The broader MERIT programme investigates viral pathogenesis, host metabolism, and long-term consequences of infection using human organoids, spatial/integrative omics, and advanced microscopy.

Eligibility highlights: a master's degree in biomedical sciences, infection, immunity, or a related field; preferred experience with viruses, mammalian cell culture, qPCR, and bioinformatics; strong English communication skills (minimum C1/C2 CEFR); and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule (no more than 12 months in the Netherlands during the 36 months before 1 April 2027).

Funding and conditions: this is a fully funded doctoral contract for 4 years at 36 hours per week, with salary scale OIO 10 (€3,217–€4,077 gross/month depending on experience), plus an 8.3% end-of-year bonus, 8% holiday allowance, and travel reimbursements. Planned secondments include Justus Liebig University Giessen (Germany) and the Medical University Innsbruck (Austria).

Deadline: apply by 30 October 2026 via the MERIT application page. Late applications will not be considered.
