About this position
Amsterdam UMC is advertising a PhD position within the EU-funded MERIT MSCA training programme: “Role of mitochondrial dysfunction in enterovirus CNS disease (MCSA-DC)”. The project is based at OrganoVIR Labs at Amsterdam UMC (location AMC) in the Netherlands and is coordinated by Dr. Adithya Sridhar (Assistant Professor) and Prof. Dr. Dasja Pajkrt (Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases).
The research focuses on virology, mitochondrial dysfunction, enterovirus, CNS disease, brain organoids, neuromuscular organoids, metabolic reprogramming, and related infectious disease mechanisms. The doctoral candidate will investigate how Enterovirus A71 affects mitochondrial function in relevant tissue models, including mitochondrial localization and morphology, ROS production, respiration and bioenergetics, transcriptomic changes in mitochondria-related genes and pathways, and functional consequences using electrophysiology.
The role is part of a multidisciplinary environment with access to advanced molecular biology, culture, sequencing, and microscopy facilities. Planned secondments include the University of Oslo and VectorY Therapeutics. The programme also includes training in safety, biosecurity, ethics, sustainability, AI/LLM topics, entrepreneurship, and non-academic coaching.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree in biomedical sciences, infection, immunity, or a related field; preferred experience in mammalian cell culture, qPCR, and bioinformatics; strong English communication skills (minimum C1/C2 CEFR); and compliance with the MSCA mobility rule (no more than 12 months in the Netherlands during the 36 months before 1 April 2027).
Funding: 4-year contract, 36 hours/week, salary scale OIO €3,217–€4,077 gross per month depending on experience, plus an 8.3% end-of-year bonus and travel reimbursements.
Deadline: 30 October 2026.
How to apply: Submit your application through the MERIT doctoral candidate vacancy page before the deadline. Late applications will not be considered.
