About this position
NTNU (Norwegian University of Science and Technology) is advertising a fully funded PhD position in modelling marine larval dispersal, spatial population genetics and demography at the Department of Biology in Trondheim, Norway.
The project sits at the interface of ecology, evolution, marine science, oceanography, computational biology, and genomics. The research aims to understand how coastlines, ocean circulation, reproductive systems, larval behaviour, and survival shape gene flow, spatial genetic structure, and demographic responses of marine populations to environmental variation and change.
The PhD candidate will work with advanced statistical and computational methods, reproducible code and workflows, and may develop projects using spatial-genetic-demographic individual-based models, SLiM, machine learning, biophysical dispersal models, hydrodynamics, particle tracking, and genomic data. The position offers broad training and opportunities for conference participation and collaboration in an international research group.
Supervision is by Associate Professor Scott Burgess (Department of Biology, NTNU).
Eligibility highlights: relevant background in ecology or evolution; strong quantitative and computational skills; good English communication; and a degree equivalent to a five-year Norwegian programme with a substantial master's thesis/project. Preferred experience includes R, Python, MATLAB, Bash/Linux, HPC, geospatial analysis, whole-genome analysis, and related modelling tools.
Funding and conditions: gross salary is NOK 550,800 per year depending on qualifications and seniority. The appointment is for 3 years for doctoral work, with a possible extension of up to 12 months for career-promoting work. The position is conditional on external funding.
Deadline: 20 October 2026. Applications must be submitted electronically via Jobbnorge.no.

What's required
Applicants must meet NTNU doctoral admission requirements, including an education equivalent to a five-year Norwegian degree programme with a major independent project of at least 30 ECTS (typically a bachelor's plus a two-year master's degree). A strong relevant academic background is required, with an average grade of B or better on NTNU's scale or an equally strong foundation if grades are not letter-based. Candidates must have good oral and written English, a relevant background in ecology or evolution, and strong quantitative and computational skills. Preferred experience includes coding in R, Python, or MATLAB; Linux/Bash and HPC use; SLiM or similar simulation software; machine learning; biophysical dispersal models; geospatial/spatial analysis; and whole-genome analysis.
How to apply
Apply electronically via Jobbnorge.no. Submit a cover letter, a 2-page statement addressing the required and preferred criteria, CV, transcripts and diplomas for bachelor's and master's degrees, and names/contact information for three referees. If applicable, include a draft or summary of the master's thesis and documentation for studies completed abroad.
