About this position
PhD position in molecular characterization of HPV-negative cervical cancer at Karolinska Institutet
This doctoral project is based in the Arroyo Mühr research group within the Center for Cervical Cancer Elimination at the Department of Clinical Science, Intervention and Technology (CLINTEC), Karolinska Institutet, Sweden. The project is part of the ERC-funded ESCAPE-HPV programme and focuses on the molecular characterization of HPV-negative cervical cancer.
The work combines molecular biology, bioinformatics, genomics, transcriptomics, epigenetics, and analysis of clinical and registry data. The doctoral student will work with clinical samples, DNA/RNA extraction, PCR/qPCR, HPV genotyping, sequencing library preparation, and bioinformatic analysis in R and/or Python. The project also involves identifying cancer cases in health registers, quality control of clinical data, ethics documentation, and collaboration with national and international partners.
Eligibility and requirements: applicants should have a relevant background in molecular biology, biomedicine, biotechnology, bioinformatics, or a related area; practical laboratory experience with DNA/RNA handling; basic experience with sequencing-based methods and bioinformatic analysis; and strong English communication skills. For doctoral admission, a master's degree or equivalent, or equivalent credits/knowledge, is required, together with proof of English proficiency equivalent to English B/6.
Merits: experience with cancer biology, virology, HPV-related research, FFPE/tumor samples, NGS platforms, genomic/transcriptomic/epigenetic analysis, scientific publications, and conference presentations is advantageous.
Funding: this is a salaried doctoral student employment for up to 4 years full-time. KI notes that doctoral students are employed according to a salary scale and receive standard employment benefits.
How to apply: submit your application in the Varbi recruitment system. Include a personal letter, CV, degree theses/publications, supporting documents for your qualifications, and documents proving both basic and specific eligibility. The application deadline is 2026-11-06.
