About this position

GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Germany is advertising a PhD candidate position in Monitoring Ionospheric TEC responses induced by Earthquakes within the Space Physics and Space Weather section of the Geodesy department.

The project focuses on ionospheric TEC, GNSS-TEC time series, earthquake-related anomalies, space physics, and space weather. The successful candidate will process and validate large-scale TEC data, integrate auxiliary datasets such as earthquake catalogues, GNSS metadata, and solar/geomagnetic indices, and apply statistical analysis, spectral methods, and function approximation techniques to distinguish coseismic disturbances from natural variability. The role also includes scientific visualisation, conference presentations, and journal publications.

Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in physics, computer science, mathematics, or a related natural science. Strong programming skills in Python or Matlab, excellent communication skills, and fluency in English are required. Experience in data analysis and scientific programming is desirable, and knowledge of space physics or space weather is a plus.

The position is fixed-term for 36 months, paid at salary group 13 (TVöD Bund), and offered at 75% part-time. The workplace is in Potsdam at the Albert Einstein Science Park on the Telegrafenberg. Applications must be submitted online only by 2026-09-06. Required documents include a CV with programming skills, a motivation letter, grades, and transcripts/certificates for the master’s degree.
