About this position
GFZ Helmholtz Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam is advertising a doctoral researcher position in hydrology / geosciences / environmental science focused on hillslope-stream connectivity, subsurface stormflow, fiber-optic sensing, and tracer techniques.
The project is part of the DFG-funded Research Unit “Fast and invisible: Conquering Subsurface Stormflow (SSF) through an Interdisciplinary Multi-Site Approach” and is carried out in collaboration with the University of Zürich and the University of Freiburg. The PhD research will investigate hillslope-riparian zone-stream connectivity at the reach-to-catchment scale using hydrometric and tracer-hydrological measurements, distributed temperature sensing (DTS), thermal infrared imagery, and stream tracer experiments. Fieldwork will take place in three catchments in Germany, supported by extensive monitoring infrastructure including trench systems for subsurface flow collection.
The role includes installation and maintenance of DTS systems, development of heat-tracer methods for preferential flow, signal processing for high-frequency measurements, optimization of monitoring equipment, and data analysis in R, Python, or Matlab. The successful candidate will present and publish scientific results and work closely with project leaders and other PhD students in a cluster hire spanning Potsdam, Bayreuth, and Zürich.
Eligibility highlights: MSc in hydrology, geosciences, environmental sciences, engineering, or a closely related field; experience in environmental sensing and fieldwork; strong quantitative/programming skills; very good English; valid European Cat. B driving license. German is helpful but not required.
Funding and terms: 3.5-year fixed-term doctoral employment, 75% part-time, salary group 13 under TVöD Bund. Start date: 1 October 2026.
