About this position

PhD opportunity at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft) in the Autonomous Multi-Robots Lab within the Cognitive Robotics Department, Faculty of Mechanical Engineering.

The project is part of HARPA, funded by the EIC Pathfinder Challenge, and focuses on multi-agent aerial manipulation for construction robotics. The research aims to enable heterogeneous aerial robot teams to autonomously assemble a pavilion, with collaboration across TU Delft, ETH Zurich, and TU Munich, and a final real-world demonstration.

PhD #1 centers on multi-agent planning and control for cable-suspended aerial multi-lifting systems (CAMLs), including decentralized planning, robust control, obstacle avoidance, onboard sensing, dynamic environments, digital twins, and hardware optimization for lifting prefabricated building components.

PhD #2 focuses on contact-aware planning and control for aerial robotic manipulators (ARMs), including imitation learning, reinforcement learning, model-based control, multimodal sensing, and contact-rich manipulation in unstructured environments. Both positions involve real-world experiments, hardware development, simulation, and collaboration with engineers and international partners.

Eligibility highlights: MSc in Robotics, Computer Science, Systems & Control, Aerospace Engineering, Applied Maths, or a related field; strong interest or experience in aerial robotics, motion planning, control, manipulation, and/or machine learning; excellent analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to work independently and in teams; willingness to do multidisciplinary research.

Language requirement: TOEFL/IELTS required unless the applicant’s MSc was taught in English. Minimum scores are TOEFL 100 or IELTS 7.0 per sub-skill.

Funding: 4-year doctoral employment, salary €3059–€3881 gross/month plus holiday allowance and end-of-year bonus.
