About this position

TU Delft is advertising a fully funded PhD position in FoilDrone, an innovative concept for autonomous maritime surveillance that combines a VTOL rotating-wing sailplane with a submerged tethered hydrofoil. The project sits at the intersection of aerospace engineering, robotics, control systems, multi-body dynamics, and maritime autonomy.

The successful candidate will take the system from concept toward physical implementation through independent research, simulation, and experimentation. Research topics include advanced multi-body dynamics and control, aerodynamic and hydrodynamic optimization, tethered vehicle modeling, and experimental validation in wind-tunnel, tow-tank, and open-water trials. The role also involves publishing in international journals, presenting at conferences, and assisting with supervision of Master’s and Bachelor’s thesis projects.

This PhD is hosted by the Faculty of Aerospace Engineering at Delft University of Technology in the Netherlands. The position is offered for 4 years in principle, with salary from €3204 to €4051 gross per month, plus holiday allowance and an end-of-year bonus. TU Delft also mentions health insurance discounts and relocation support through its Coming to Delft Service.

Applicants should have an MSc in Aerospace Engineering, Robotics, Control Systems, or a closely related field. Strong skills in flight dynamics, GNC, numerical simulation (MATLAB/Simulink and/or Python), and hands-on UAV or hydrofoil experience are preferred. Excellent English communication and a collaborative research mindset are required.

The application deadline is 2 November 2026. Apply online through the TU Delft careers portal and upload a CV, motivational letter, and drone license if applicable. Applications sent by email or post will not be processed.
