About this position
This PhD project, based at The University of Manchester, focuses on multi-arm and constrained manipulation in robotics, with applications spanning surgical, space, scientific, and nuclear domains. The research addresses the challenges of dexterous manipulation in constrained spaces, where safety and adaptability are paramount due to the potential for catastrophic outcomes from unintended robot motion. The project will explore advanced robot control solutions, such as control-barrier functions, and develop reactive capabilities to handle dynamic and changing environments, including those involving deformable or biological materials and evolving workspace topologies.
Research directions include model-based constrained optimisation for dexterous manipulation using multiple robotic arms, and data-driven approaches to represent and integrate environmental changes into control strategies. The candidate will have access to state-of-the-art facilities, including a variety of robotic systems (UR30, UR3e, KUKA R820 Med, Kinova arms) and a range of aerial, mobile, and legged robots. The project can be based in Manchester (Nancy Rothwell Building, Control Systems and Robotics Group) or at RAICo1 in Whitehaven, Cumbria, offering flexibility in research environment.
Applicants should hold or expect to achieve at least a 2.1 honours degree or a master’s (or international equivalent) in a relevant science or engineering discipline. The position is fully funded for excellent candidates, covering tuition fees and providing a tax-free stipend at the UKRI rate (£20,780 for 2025/26), with annual increases expected. Self-funded students are also welcome to apply. The university values diversity and inclusion, encourages applicants from all backgrounds, and supports flexible study arrangements.
Applications are accepted year-round, but early application is recommended as the advert may be removed before the deadline. Prospective candidates are strongly encouraged to contact the supervisor before applying, providing details of their academic background, experience, and motivation for the project. The application process requires submission of transcripts, CV, a supporting statement, and contact details for two referees. For further information or questions, applicants may contact the admissions team at [email protected].
