About this position

PhD opportunity at Mines Saint-Étienne (Institut Mines-Télécom) in Saint-Étienne, France, focused on the development and characterization of a multi-sensor platform for monitoring onshore CO2 storage sites.

The doctoral project is hosted at the SPIN – LGF center (Georges Friedel Laboratory, UMR CNRS 5307) and is part of the CO2MET consortium with IFPEN, BRGM, Mines Saint-Étienne, and Cerema. The research combines instrumentation, sensor development, metrology, data acquisition and processing, multivariate analysis, and predictive algorithms for long-term CO2 monitoring.

Scientific tasks include selecting existing sensors, testing selectivity against interfering gases, studying reproducibility/drift/linearity/variability in complex gas mixtures, analyzing environmental effects such as temperature, pressure, and humidity, and developing compensation algorithms for sensor aging. The project also includes field case studies at the Sainte-Marguerite site (Puy-de-Dôme) to validate the sensor platform under variable CO2 emission conditions.

Eligibility highlights: Bac+5 or equivalent, ideally a Master 2 in measurement, instrumentation, metrology, or data acquisition/analysis. Research internship or professional experience is preferred, and strong skills in sensors, experimental work, statistics/probabilities, and Python are valuable. Good oral and written English communication is also expected.

This is a 3-year doctoral contract. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis. Candidates should submit their documents through the Recruitee application portal.
