About this position
PhD position in Multisensory Development at the ARTORG Center for Biomedical Engineering Research, University of Bern, within the Multimodal and Multisensory Development Lab.
This doctoral project is part of the SNSF Starting Grant project PREDICT (“Neural and Behavioral Mechanisms of Cognitive Development Across Infancy, Childhood, and Adolescence: From Sleep to Multisensory Integration”). The successful candidate will develop and implement a multisensory experiment for a cross-sectional study of children and adolescents aged 6–15 years.
The research combines virtual reality (VR), visual and auditory cues, controlled vestibular stimulation via a motorised yaw chair, 128-channel EEG, eye tracking, behavioural tasks, and standardised cognitive assessments. The project examines multisensory conflict processing, sensory reweighting, attention, executive control, and cognitive performance across development.
Applicants should have a completed or nearly completed Master’s degree in engineering or a closely related quantitative discipline, strong programming skills in MATLAB and Python, experience with at least two of EEG, VR development, eye tracking, or vestibular stimulation, and familiarity with device synchronization and timing verification. Working knowledge of R, experimental design, and inferential statistics is expected. Experience with human participants is required, and the role involves recruitment and testing of children and adolescents. German is needed for independent recruitment and communication with families; strong scientific English is also required.
The position is 100% fixed-term for 3 years and is funded by an SNSF Starting Grant. Salary follows applicable SNSF and University of Bern doctoral employment regulations.
Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Apply by email to [email protected] with a single PDF including your CV, a motivation and skills statement (up to two pages), degree certificates and transcripts, and contact details of two referees. Use the subject line “PREDICT WP3 PhD application”. Early applications are encouraged.
