About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Leeds: Muscle function during running

This PhD project (PGR-P-1892) is based in the School of Biomedical Sciences at the University of Leeds and is supervised by Dr Graham Askew. The project investigates how leg muscles operate mechanically during walking and running, and how their actions are coordinated to produce stable and economical locomotion.

The research uses an animal model and combines state-of-the-art physiological and biomechanical methods, including electromyography, sonomicrometry, muscle ergometry, and 3D motion analysis to study limb and body kinematics and kinetics. The work aims to improve understanding of muscle function during locomotion and to advance models that may support the 3Rs (replacement, reduction, refinement) in animal research and inform treatments for gait disorders.

Funding: This is a non-funded PhD. Applicants must have their own funding or a sponsor to cover study costs.

Eligibility: Applicants should normally hold at least a first-class or upper second-class British Bachelors Honours degree (or equivalent) in an appropriate discipline. Some research degrees may require a Masters degree. International applicants are welcome, and if English is not your first language you must meet the University of Leeds minimum English language requirement (IELTS 6.0 overall with at least 5.5 in each component, or equivalent).

Deadline: 31 August 2027.

How to apply: Submit the online application form, attach your CV, degree certificate, transcripts, and English language evidence if applicable. Select PhD in Biological Sciences and include the full project title and supervisor name in your application.
