About this position

PhD opportunity at Uppsala University, Sweden in nature-inspired biocarbon–enzyme composites for PFAS remediation.

The project, EnzCarb4PFAS, is hosted by the Department of Earth Sciences at Uppsala University and focuses on developing a circular in situ remediation strategy for persistent PFAS contamination in soil and groundwater. The research combines environmental chemistry, materials science, biochemistry, and water treatment to create lignin-derived biocarbon materials that adsorb PFAS and immobilized enzymes that can catalytically degrade them.

Research tasks include synthesis and characterization of lignin-derived biocarbon, screening and immobilization of enzymes, PFAS adsorption/degradation testing, laboratory column experiments, and pilot-scale lysimeter studies using real contaminated groundwater and soil. The project also involves collaboration with industrial partners and academic groups in Sweden and internationally.

Supervision will be by Assistant Professor Tetyana Budnyak (main supervisor) and Professor Fritjof Fagerlund (co-supervisor).

Eligibility: a Master’s degree in chemistry, biochemistry, environmental chemistry, materials science, environmental engineering, or a related field; at least 240 higher-education credits including 60 credits at Master’s level with an independent project of at least 15 credits, or equivalent knowledge. Strong English skills are required. Experience with PFAS analysis, remediation technologies, materials characterization, or data analysis is an advantage.

Funding: full-time temporary PhD employment with salary according to local agreement for PhD students.

Deadline: 18 September 2026. Apply via Uppsala University’s recruitment system and answer the application questions instead of submitting a cover letter.
