About this position
Maastricht University (Netherlands) is recruiting a PhD Candidate in NeuroAI for Auditory Neuroscience within the NASCE project (Natural Auditory SCEnes in Humans and Machines), an ERC Synergy collaboration focused on how the human brain transforms complex natural sounds into meaningful percepts and how artificial neural networks can help explain these computations.
The position is based in the AuditoRy Cognition in Humans and MachInEs (ARCHIE) lab at the Faculty of Psychology and Neuroscience, led by Prof. Elia Formisano, and involves collaboration with Dr. Bruno Giordano (CNRS, Marseille). The project combines auditory neuroscience, neuroimaging, fMRI (including high-field 7T data), AI/NeuroAI, machine learning, deep learning, and computational modelling to study natural sound perception in humans and machines.
Responsibilities include acquiring and analysing neuroimaging data, developing and applying AI models, relating brain and behavioural representations, contributing to experiments, publishing and presenting results, and supporting open and reproducible research. The role also includes up to 0.1 FTE teaching or supervision at Maastricht University.
Applicants should have a Master’s degree in a relevant quantitative field such as cognitive/computational neuroscience, AI, computer science, biomedical engineering, cognitive sciences, or data science. Experience in either neuroimaging or AI/ML is required, along with strong quantitative skills, Python programming ability, and English at C1 level. What's required
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in cognitive or computational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, computer science, biomedical engineering, cognitive sciences with a strong quantitative focus, data science, or a related field. Relevant experience in at least one core area is required: human neuroimaging (preferably fMRI, though other neuroimaging techniques are acceptable) or AI/machine learning/NeuroAI with practical model implementation, training, and evaluation. Candidates should be motivated to learn the complementary field, have a strong quantitative background with statistics and data analysis, good programming skills preferably in Python, and English proficiency at minimum C1 level (CEFR). Experience with multivariate or computational modelling and deep learning frameworks such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, or JAX is an advantage.
