This competition-funded PhD project focuses on next-generation epoxy composite materials for HVDC converter transformer bushings. The research sits at the intersection of electrical engineering, materials science, physics, and computer science, with strong emphasis on high-voltage insulation, dielectric performance, thermal behaviour, mechanical stability, ageing, and machine learning for materials selection.
The project addresses a major challenge in future low-carbon power networks: improving the reliability of HVDC equipment through advanced polymeric insulation materials. The student will study how filler type, filler concentration, and filler-interface structure affect charge transport, electric-field distribution, thermal conductivity, toughness, dielectric strength, processability, and long-term stability. A physics-guided framework will combine finite-element electric-field modelling, molecular dynamics simulation, laboratory characterisation, and data-efficient machine learning to reduce trial-and-error materials development.
Research will be split between Manchester and Tsinghua. At Manchester, the student will work on electric-field modelling, molecular simulation, space-charge interpretation, and physics-informed machine learning. At Tsinghua University, the student will prepare and test epoxy composite samples and carry out dielectric, thermal, mechanical, and ageing characterisation under controlled laboratory conditions.
Eligibility highlights: UK and international students may apply via Manchester; Chinese nationals (Mainland China, Taiwan, Macau, and Hong Kong) should apply via Tsinghua. Applicants should have a relevant 2:1 honours degree or equivalent, or a relevant master's degree at merit for Manchester entry. Tsinghua entry requires a master's-level degree certificate at merit or distinction, or an MPhys/MChem/MEng at 2:1 or above, or equivalent. English language competence is required, typically IELTS 6.5 overall with minimum sub-scores as stated in the advert.
Funding: fees are waived at both institutions. Manchester-recruited students receive a UKRI-rate stipend (£21,805 for 2026/27) for up to two years in Manchester, a flight allowance for travel to Tsinghua, and up to £5,000 per year in research training grant support. Students must apply for China Link Scholarship funding for the Tsinghua period; successful applicants are guaranteed accommodation there.
