About this position
PhD opportunity in next-generation redox flow batteries at Queen Mary University of London. This fully funded 4-year studentship is based in the QMUL School of Engineering and Materials Science and the QMUL Centre for Sustainable Engineering, working on Advancing Redox-Targeting Flow Batteries with Solid Boosters for Breakthrough Energy Density.
The project sits at the intersection of electrochemistry, energy materials, materials science, and advanced spectroscopy. The research aims to transform large-scale, long-duration energy storage for a net-zero future by developing the next generation of redox flow batteries. You will investigate electrochemical processes, redox mechanisms, ion transport, and degradation pathways in flow battery systems.
The project is sponsored by The Faraday Institution, Queen Mary University of London, and Invinity Energy Systems, a global leader in vanadium flow battery technology. A major feature of the studentship is a placement of at least 4 months at Invinity’s Materials R&D laboratory, giving direct industry experience.
You will also work closely with Clare Grey and her team at the University of Cambridge, who will co-supervise in-situ NMR experiments. This collaboration will help probe electrochemical processes as they happen and deepen understanding of battery behaviour under operating conditions.
Eligibility: this studentship is for home-fees students only. The post is especially suitable for candidates with interests in battery science, electrochemical energy storage, and sustainable engineering.
Application: email [email protected] to express interest and complete the linked survey/form. The Faraday Institution survey indicates Cohort 9 commencing October 2026, so the application window is aligned with that intake.
