About this position

This PhD project at the University of Southampton, supervised by Dr Dong-Yang Wang, focuses on the frontier research area of non-Hermitian topological physics. The research will explore exceptional points and surfaces, non-Hermitian skin effect, and catastrophe theory, aiming to advance understanding of topological band theory and its role in generating new phases of matter with novel material properties. Topological physics has significant impact across materials science, photonics, acoustics, and electronics, and this project will investigate how non-Hermitian physics—characterized by gain/loss mechanisms in practical systems—enables new topological phenomena beyond traditional Hermitian systems.

The project will combine theoretical investigations with experimental demonstrations, particularly through topological electrical circuits. Key topics include topological phase transitions, band gap topology, and momentum space singularities. The School of Optoelectronics (ORC) provides a supportive and inclusive research environment, recognized for its commitment to equality, diversity, and sustainability.

Applicants should have a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in physics or mathematics, with a strong background and research interest in these fields. Knowledge of electrical circuits is advantageous.
