About this position
PhD position at the Universitat de Barcelona in nonlinear Casimir–optomechanics on silicon-on-insulator (SOI) nanophotonic cavities. The project sits at the intersection of physics, nanoscience, photonics, and electrical engineering, with a strong experimental and theoretical focus on how Casimir–Lifshitz forces affect mechanical stiffness and nonlinear dynamics in nanoscale structures.
The selected candidate will work on the design, simulation, optical and radio-frequency characterization of photonic-crystal and slot cavities, and on the analysis of phenomena such as Casimir-induced frequency shifts, Duffing nonlinearities, hysteresis, intermodulation, and parametric amplification. The project also includes secondments at Danmarks Tekniske Universitet and Lizard Photonics ApS, offering exposure to nanomechanics theory and fabrication/cavity design.
Eligibility: applicants should have a degree and master’s qualification in Physics, Photonics, Nanoscience, Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline, and must satisfy admission requirements for the Nanoscience doctoral programme at the University of Barcelona. Strong English is required; basic Spanish and Catalan are listed. Experience with COMSOL, Lumerical, optical lab work, data analysis, scientific programming, and nonlinear dynamics is valued.
Funding: the position is a 3-year contract funded through Horizon Europe / MSCA (Marie Curie Grant Agreement No. 101312406).
Location: Barcelona, Spain.
Deadline: 1 November 2026 at 17:00 (Europe/Madrid).
