About this position

PhD studentship in magnetic metamaterials and millimetre-wave devices at the University of Exeter, based in the Department of Physics & Astronomy on the Streatham Campus in Exeter, England.

This is an industrial PhD project linked to Leonardo UK and the EPSRC MetaHUB initiative, focused on the discovery, development, and commercial translation of new 3D nanoscale magnetic metamaterials. The research combines experimental and computational work, including nanoscale geometry design, bespoke miniaturised antennas, magnetic nanoparticle structures, micro/nanofabrication, electromagnetic and micromagnetic modelling, and analysis of electromagnetic properties for defence and security applications.

The studentship is fully funded and covers postgraduate tuition fees, a training budget, and a tax-free stipend of at least £22,805 per year for 4 years full-time study.

Eligibility highlights: applicants must be UK Nationals or UK Dual Nationals; they should hold or be close to completing a 1:1 or 2:1 degree (or equivalent) in a relevant area such as Physical Science, Materials Science, or Engineering. Computational ability is expected, and candidates should be willing to learn AI/programming tools, microwave technologies, and collaborative industrial research practices.

Deadline: 31 August 2027 at 23:59 BST. Apply through the linked jobs.ac.uk posting and the University of Exeter funding page for full details.
