About this position
PhD opportunity at the University of New South Wales (UNSW Sydney) in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with the Sydney Vascular Modelling Group (SVMG).
This project focuses on optimising coronary stent design through computational and benchtop testing. The research combines computational fluid dynamics, patient-specific modelling, experimental biomechanics, and cardiovascular engineering to study how stent geometry affects blood flow, vessel mechanics, restenosis, thrombosis, and vessel injury. The successful candidate will develop and evaluate next-generation coronary stent designs using laboratory flow-loop and benchtop systems, with opportunities to work with clinicians and industry partners.
Research areas/keywords: coronary stent design, biomedical engineering, mechanical engineering, engineering mathematics, fluid mechanics, mechatronics, cardiovascular testing, medical device innovation.
Eligibility highlights: Applicants should have a background in biomedical engineering, data science, computer science, mathematics, statistics, or a related discipline. Strong academic performance and research potential are expected. Domestic applicants need First Class Honours (or equivalent) or a research-heavy master's degree, plus WAM 75% or equivalent and evidence of research capability. International applicants should typically hold an honours/research-intensive degree from a top-ranked university and preferably have first-author publications or other strong research evidence.
Funding: Competition funded PhD project. The UNSW PhD Scholarship covers tuition/course fees and provides a living stipend of about AUD 40,000 per year, indexed annually.
Application window: Applications are accepted all year round and reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled.
How to apply: Email the supervisor with a cover letter, CV, transcripts, and two referees. The project page also links to UNSW PhD scholarship information.
