About this position

Doctoral Researcher in Organoid Intelligence at the University of Luxembourg, Luxembourg Centre for Systems Biomedicine (LCSB), Belval Campus.

This PhD project sits at the intersection of neuroscience, biology, biomedical engineering, and computer science. The successful candidate will work on organoid generation and long-term maintenance, multielectrode array (MEA) stimulation and recording, closed-loop training protocols, and computational analysis to study activity-dependent plasticity, functional connectivity, learning, and memory in human neural tissue. The project also aims to advance organoid intelligence (OI) as a computing paradigm and to explore reservoir computing with human brain organoids as a physical reservoir.

Eligibility highlights include a Master’s degree (or equivalent) in neuroscience, bioengineering, biology, biophysics, or a closely related field; hands-on MEA experience; a strong background in neurobiology and learning/memory mechanisms; and an asset profile including human stem cell biology, iPSC culture, neural differentiation, brain organoid generation, Python or MATLAB, and interest in machine learning or reservoir computing. Applicants must show at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis.

The position is a fixed-term full-time doctoral contract for 24 months. The yearly gross salary is EUR 43,445.

To apply, submit a CV, cover letter, transcript of university-level courses/results, and contact details for 1–2 referees. Apply online via the HR system; email applications will not be considered. Early application is encouraged.

What's required

Master’s degree or equivalent in neuroscience, bioengineering, biology, biophysics or a closely related field. Hands-on experience with multielectrode array (MEA) technology, including electrophysiological stimulation and recording and analysis of extracellular network activity, is required. A solid background in neurobiology, ideally with knowledge of learning and memory mechanisms such as synaptic plasticity, long-term potentiation, and neural network dynamics, is expected. Experience with human stem cell biology and organoids, such as iPSC culture, neural differentiation, or brain organoid generation, is a strong asset. Familiarity with data analysis and scientific programming such as Python or MATLAB, and interest in reservoir computing or machine learning, is welcome. Applicants must demonstrate at least B2-level proficiency in the language of their thesis.

How to apply

Prepare a CV, cover letter, transcript of university-level courses and results, and the names/contact details/current positions of 1-2 referees. Apply online through the HR system; email applications will not be considered. Early application is encouraged.
