About this position

PhD opportunity: Patterning in dynamic environments at The Francis Crick Institute with Dr Zena Hadjivasiliou.

This funded PhD project focuses on how embryos generate spatial patterns in dynamic tissues, combining biophysics, biology, mathematics, computer science, and computational biology. The project investigates how morphogen gradients, gene regulatory networks (GRNs), tissue growth, cell movement, and proliferation interact to shape development and produce emergent properties such as robustness and scaling.

The student will build theoretical frameworks grounded in experimental observations and may work directly with experimental data through collaborations with experimental colleagues. Training will include best coding practices, high-performance computing (HPC), analytical and numerical methods for ODEs/PDEs, dynamical systems, and machine learning for data analysis.

Ideal applicants will have a background in mathematics, physics, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline, plus a strong interest in biology. The lab especially welcomes candidates interested in bridging physics, computational and mathematical biology, developmental and evolutionary biology, and those comfortable working collaboratively across disciplines. Coding experience is strongly encouraged.

Funding includes a non-taxable annual stipend of £27,715 plus full university tuition fees. Students of all nationalities are eligible to apply.

Research area keywords: biophysics, developmental biology, mathematical biology, computational biology, morphogen gradients, gene regulatory networks, tissue dynamics, cell signalling, dynamical systems, machine learning.

Application prompt: applicants should explain what aspect of the lab’s research they would most like to explore and what perspective, skill, or approach they would bring.
