About this position
Technische Universität München (TUM) is advertising a PhD position in philosophy of science, social studies of science and technology (STS), and the study of scientific modelling, with a focus on computational fluid dynamics (CFD) and sustainability. The position is embedded in the Horizon Europe MSCA Doctoral Network FairCFD (“Towards sustainable computational fluid dynamics”), coordinated by the Institut National Polytechnique de Toulouse, and hosted at the TUM School of Social Sciences and Technology.
The project examines how modelling practices can become more sustainable, including their institutional, social, epistemic, environmental, and ethical dimensions. The doctoral researcher will use qualitative methods such as ethnographic fieldwork, interviews, literature review, participant observation, and analysis of research cultures and sustainability metrics across the network’s partner institutions and industrial collaborators.
Supervision is linked to the Chair for Anthropology of Science & Technology (Professor Niewoehner) and the Chair for the Philosophy and History of Science and Technology (Professor Leonelli). The role is part of an interdisciplinary team working on modelling, data-intensive research, governance of data and AI, and the broader science-technology-society interface.
Funding: 36 months of MSCA-funded PhD support, with an estimated €3800 gross/month plus a possible €600 family allowance. The contract is temporary and full-time. The position starts preferably in November 2026.
Eligibility highlights: Master’s-level background or equivalent experience in philosophy, history, social studies of science, or a related field; strong interest in scientific models and/or data-intensive methods; excellent English; German/French are advantageous. MSCA mobility rules apply: applicants must not have spent more than 12 months in Germany during the 36 months before the start date.
Deadline: 11 September 2026, 23:59 (Europe/Berlin).
How to apply: Visit the FairCFD website and review the full advert on Euraxess. Prepare a strong application showing your fit for qualitative research on modelling, sustainability, and STS/philosophy of science.
