About this position
Vrije Universiteit Brussel (VUB) is offering a full-time PhD position in Photonics Engineering within the Brussels Photonics (B-PHOT) research group at the Faculty of Engineering. The project focuses on end-to-end incoherent holographic imaging, a cutting-edge area that combines optics, holography, and computational imaging to recover three-dimensional scene information from naturally and spatially incoherent light. The work is carried out in close collaboration with the ETRO research group at VUB and the National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Japan.
The successful candidate will investigate models for incoherent light propagation and use them to jointly optimize optics and computational imaging methods. The project also includes development and prototyping of camera optics and hardware for high-quality hologram capture under natural lighting conditions. This is an excellent opportunity for a motivated researcher interested in applied physics, photonics, optical design, and machine learning, with the goal of completing a doctorate in four years.
In addition to research, the PhD student will contribute to a limited extent to teaching and supervision activities within the B-PHOT department, including exercises, practical sessions, and projects. The role also offers exposure to international collaboration, conference participation, and publication in peer-reviewed journals.
The position is based at VUB’s Brussels Humanities, Sciences & Engineering Campus (Elsene) in Brussels, Belgium. Applicants should hold a Master’s degree in Engineering Sciences (Photonics, Electronics and Information Technology) or Physics, or an equivalent degree. Fluency in English is required. Experience or strong interest in optical design and machine learning is considered an asset.
The appointment is a doctoral scholarship initially offered for 12 months and extendable up to 48 months upon positive evaluation. The grant is linked to government scales. Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Engineering Sciences (Photonics, Electronics and Information Technology) or Physics, or an equivalent degree recognised by the competent university authorities. Applicants must be fluent in English. Strong interest in applied physics and photonics research and the ambition to complete a PhD are required. Expertise in optical design and machine learning is a strong asset. Applicants must not have performed assistant duties paid from operating resources for more than 12 months in total. Non-EEA and EEA nationals must meet the conditions for obtaining a valid permit for VUB and comply with residence requirements.
