About this position
PhD opportunity in Plant RNA Biology at the Institute for Molecular Physiology, Faculty 10: Biology, Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz. The Wachter group studies the molecular mechanisms and biological functions of alternative RNA splicing in plants, with a focus on DEAD-box helicases, structured mRNA elements, RGG motifs, subcellular localisation, and possible roles in phase separation.
The project is carried out in an interdisciplinary and international research team and includes collaboration with the Weinberg group at the University of Halle-Wittenberg. Research will use Arabidopsis thaliana as the main model system and combine molecular biology, RNA biochemistry, cell biology, and plant physiology. The position is funded by the DFG and can be integrated into the international PhD programme (IPP) in Mainz.
Eligibility highlights: completed Master or Diplom degree in Biology or a related field, practical experience with molecular methods, background in plant molecular biology and/or RNA biology, and very good English skills (at least B2). The role also involves teaching support for Bachelor’s and Master’s students, organizational tasks, and presenting results in oral and written form.
Funding and terms: paid according to EG 13 TV-L, 65% position, initially limited to 3 years, starting 01 Dec 2026.
