About this position
Utrecht University is advertising a PhD position in practical implementation of nature-based solutions within the Faculty of Geosciences, Department of Sustainable Development. The project focuses on coastal resilience, nature-based solutions (NbS), and the practical challenges of implementing sediment-based NbS in climate-affected coastal zones.
The research will examine how NbS such as salt marshes, tidal mudflats, and retention basins can help create and adapt climate-resilient coastal landscapes. Key topics include sediment dynamics, storm-driven sediment delivery, spatial patterns of sedimentation, sediment quality, integration with existing grey infrastructure such as storm surge barriers, and the social acceptance of NbS among stakeholders.
The project combines fieldwork, lab analyses, experiments at the Metronome tidal flume, GIS mapping, modeling, and stakeholder workshops. It also aims to develop a citizen science component with colleagues at Hogeschool Zeeland to monitor storm-driven sediment delivery. The work is linked to Delta-Enigma, the Delta Climate Center, and ongoing research on storm surge barrier feasibility.
This is a PhD opening with a 1.0 FTE appointment for one year initially, extendable to four years after a successful first-year assessment. The salary is listed as €3,059 to €3,881 gross per month for full-time employment, plus holiday pay, year-end bonus, pension, and other employment benefits.
Applicants should have a relevant Master’s degree in coastal geomorphology, environmental engineering, sedimentology, hydrology, earth sciences, environmental science, civil engineering, physical geography, or environmental governance. Required skills include field sampling and monitoring, labwork, experiments, GIS, basic data analysis in R/Python/Excel, strong communication, problem-solving, teamwork, and excellent English at C1 level. Interest in interdisciplinary research, stakeholder engagement, and citizen science is considered useful.
