About this position

PhD opportunity at Quadram Institute Bioscience, Norwich, United Kingdom. This funded project explores protein glycosylation, bacterial colonisation, and gut adaptation in Gram-positive bacteria, with a focus on Limosilactobacillus reuteri and serine-rich repeat proteins (SRRPs).

The project sits within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme and offers a fully funded 4-year PhD studentship. Funding includes tuition fees, an annual stipend for living costs, and a Research Training Support Grant. The student will join a multidisciplinary team and gain training in molecular microbiology, glycobiology, biochemistry, imaging, bioinformatics, gut organoids, organ-on-chip methods, and in vivo mouse models.

Research themes include the accessory secretion (aSec) system, strain-specific glycosylation, biofilm formation, host-microbe interactions, and mechanisms that support bacterial colonisation of the gut. The project combines in vitro and in vivo approaches to address fundamental questions in microbiology and microbial adaptation.

Eligibility: applicants should have at least a UK-equivalent Bachelors (Honours) 2:1 and meet the English language requirement (IELTS 6.5 overall, 6.0 in each category or equivalent). The programme is open to students worldwide.

Deadline: 30 November 2026. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. Start date is 1 October 2027.

To apply, visit the NRPDTP doctoral training partnership page for bioscience graduates and follow the application instructions. Bespoke personal and research statement templates must be used where required.
