About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Dundee in the area of gut microbiota, glycan metabolism, microbiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, structural biology, and bioinformatics.

This EASTBIO BBSRC Doctoral Training Partnership project is titled “Understanding the genetic and molecular basis of complex glycan metabolism by the human gut microbiota.” The research focuses on how beneficial gut microbes such as Bacteroides and Prevotella break down complex dietary glycans, and how these pathways influence human health, dysbiosis, and disease risk.

The project combines bioinformatic, genetic, biochemical, and structural biology approaches to identify key genes and pathways involved in complex glycan utilisation, confirm biochemical function, and explore the structural and molecular basis of these mechanisms. The work also includes model-organism studies using C. elegans to uncover fundamental mechanisms with translational relevance.

Students will gain hands-on training in gene cloning, protein expression and purification, microbial genetic manipulation, glycan/glycoprotein extraction and purification, HPLC, mass spectrometry, NMR spectroscopy, and structural biology techniques. The student will also have access to professional courses and mentoring support at the University of Dundee.

Funding: 4-year funded PhD, supported by the EastBio BBSRC Doctoral Landscape Award. Funding includes a stipend at the UKRI standard rate and UK tuition fees; the university covers the Home-International fee difference.

Eligibility: Open to UK and international students. The programme includes mandatory training and a 3-month placement.

Application: Applicants are directed to the University of Dundee programme page for full instructions and the EASTBIO DTP studentship application route.
