About this position
MSCA Doctoral Network PhD opportunity in quality of life, resilience, leukodystrophy, patient-reported outcomes, psychology, medicine, and public health within the POLARIS consortium.
The project focuses on improving how quality of life is measured in leukodystrophy, a group of rare genetic disorders affecting the brain’s white matter. The research combines qualitative and quantitative methods to evaluate existing measures, develop and validate a new tool for patients and families, and study risk and resilience factors linked to parental distress, coping, and long-term outcomes.
The position is embedded in the POLARIS doctoral network, which brings together expertise in leukodystrophy biology, advanced disease models, therapeutic innovation, biomarker development, clinical translation, patient engagement, and ethical/regulatory/health-economic aspects of therapy development. The successful candidate will work with clinicians, psychologists, methodologists, patient representatives, and researchers across the consortium.
Work is based in Tübingen, Germany, with academic enrolment through the Eberhard Karls University of Tübingen. Planned secondments at the University of Oulu and the Anna Freud Centre will provide experience in digital quality-of-life assessment and psychosocial research. The project also involves engagement with the European Leukodystrophy Association and other patient organisations.
Eligibility highlights: a Master’s degree or equivalent in psychology, medicine, health or nursing sciences, public health, rehabilitation sciences, epidemiology, or a related social/behavioural/biomedical field; strong empirical research and applied statistics background; English proficiency; and MSCA mobility/doctoral eligibility rules. Experience with psychometrics, questionnaire development, longitudinal or multilevel modelling, qualitative or mixed-methods research, Delphi methods, and R/SPSS/Stata is advantageous.

What's required
Master's degree or equivalent qualifying degree, including a medical degree, in psychology, medicine, health or nursing sciences, public health, rehabilitation sciences, epidemiology, or a related field in the social, behavioural or biomedical sciences; solid foundation in empirical research methods and applied statistics; interest in measuring subjective and patient-reported outcomes; good analytical, organisational and academic writing skills; ability to work independently and collaborate across disciplines; proficiency in English. Experience with questionnaire or instrument development, psychometrics, longitudinal or multilevel modelling, qualitative or mixed-methods research, or Delphi consensus methods is an advantage. Working knowledge of R, SPSS or Stata is expected. Experience with children, families, or people with chronic or rare diseases is also an advantage. MSCA eligibility applies: no doctoral degree yet, and limited residence/activity in Germany in the three years before contract start.
