About this position
PhD Position: “Beyond the Odds” – Unravelling Pathways to Gambling-related Harm at Radboud University (Behavioural Science Institute, Nijmegen, Netherlands).
This PhD project is part of a ZonMw-funded consortium and focuses on gambling-related harm, psychology, economics, decision sciences, and advanced quantitative analysis. The project asks why some people develop gambling-related harm while others do not, even under similar circumstances. You will work with the LISS panel, a large longitudinal panel based on a representative sample of the Dutch population, and use rich longitudinal data together with new measurement waves to study how psychological, social, and economic factors shape vulnerability over time.
The research is highly interdisciplinary and quantitative. You will help develop and conduct three dedicated measurement waves among about 1,000 participants with recent gambling experience, then combine these data with existing information on mental health, personality, socioeconomic circumstances, relationships, social integration, and major life events. The project uses advanced statistical methods to examine interactions among vulnerability factors, the development of gambling behaviour and harm, and the timing of changes over time.
You will be embedded in the BSI PhD graduate school, contribute a 10% teaching task, and have the opportunity to work toward the University Teaching Qualification. The supervisory team includes Bernd Figner, Kim Fairley, Kirsten Rohde, and Harmen Beurmanjer. Collaboration is expected across Radboud University, Maastricht University, and other Dutch and international partners.
Eligibility highlights: Research Master’s or Master’s degree in psychology, economics, or a related field; strong background in advanced statistics and research methods; experience with panel data is a plus; commitment to Open Science; strong English communication skills; Dutch proficiency or willingness to learn Dutch.

What's required
Applicants need a Research Master's or Master's degree in psychology (cognitive/experimental, decision-making or clinical/health), economics, or a related relevant field. A strong basis in advanced statistics and research methods is required, including experience with mixed-effects models, cross-lagged panel analysis, latent class analysis, preferably in R. Experience with existing panel data is a plus. Candidates should be committed to Open Science practices, with pre-registration experience desirable. Strong creativity, openness to learning, collaborative and interdisciplinary mindset, excellent English communication skills, and either existing Dutch proficiency or willingness to learn Dutch are expected.
