About this position
Forschungszentrum Jülich GmbH is advertising a PhD position at the Ernst Ruska-Centre for Microscopy and Spectroscopy with Electrons (ER-C), specifically ER-C-1 (Physics of Nanoscale Systems), in Jülich, Germany.
The project is titled Quantitative Analysis of Carrier Dynamics in Operando Photovoltaic Devices Using Analytical Electron Microscopy. It focuses on nanoscale processes in silicon-based photovoltaic devices, especially light-to-electricity conversion, charge carrier dynamics, electrostatic potentials, recombination, and defect-related effects. The work uses off-axis electron holography in a transmission electron microscope, combined with ultrafast laser excitation and pulsed electron beams. Additional techniques include TEM specimen preparation, scanning transmission electron microscopy, convergent beam electron diffraction, electron energy loss spectroscopy, and geometrical phase analysis.
Applicants should have an excellent completed master’s degree in physics, chemistry, materials science, engineering, or a related field. Strong knowledge of semiconductor physics, lasers, and optics is required, and experience with transmission electron microscopy is preferred. The role also calls for practical lab skills, self-motivation, teamwork, responsibility for laboratory equipment, and very good written and spoken English.
The position is paid at TVöD-Bund pay group 13 (75%) and is initially limited to 3 years. The post includes a year-end bonus and access to research infrastructure, international networking, training, and support for doctoral candidates.
Application: apply online through the job posting/career portal. The vacancy is open until filled, so early application is advisable. For questions, the contact email listed is [email protected].
