About this position

PhD studentship at South East Technological University (SETU), Walton Institute, Ireland, in collaboration with Ulster University and with access to data through the LHCb collaboration at CERN.

The project focuses on quantum entanglement, quantum tomography, high energy particle physics, and the development of AI / machine learning methods for particle decays and proton-collision data from the Large Hadron Collider. The work combines theory, simulation, high-performance computing, and interpretable/explainable AI for current and future collider physics.

Ideal applicants should have a background in particle physics and/or advanced quantum mechanics, plus experience in programming, simulation, or artificial intelligence. Strong analytical, organizational, communication, and writing skills are expected. English-language evidence is required for non-native speakers. Desirable experience includes quantum theory, research project delivery, scientific writing, and willingness to spend time at CERN.

This is a fully funded PhD with a 4-year duration, a stipend of €25,000 per year, tuition/fees covered up to €5,750 per year, and €3,000 per year for research costs.

Deadline: Thursday 27 August 2026 at 4pm Irish time. Apply via the SETU online application form and include all supporting documents.
