About this position
PhD opportunity at the Centre for Space and Habitability and the Division for Space Research and Planetary Sciences, University of Bern, within the new NCCR Genesis research infrastructure. The project sits at the intersection of physics, chemistry, biology, earth science, and astronomy, with a strong focus on astrobiology, biosignatures, and life detection.
The PhD research will combine remote sensing via circular spectro-polarimetry with in situ laser-based mass spectrometry to detect or characterize signatures of life. The work includes laboratory experiments with cell cultures and anaerobic microorganisms, studies of organic molecules relevant to Solar System environments, and targeted field measurements of soil material containing microorganisms and low-abundant organics. The project is designed to inform future life-detection missions, including ESA’s planned L4 mission to Enceladus and future NASA missions to Mars.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team with expertise in astrophysics, microbiology, biomedicine, and engineering. Training will be provided in microbiological techniques and instrumentation; prior wet-lab experience is helpful, and a basic understanding of polarization, vacuum technology, or mass spectrometry is an advantage.
Eligibility: applicants should hold an MSc in physics, chemistry, or biology and have excellent English communication skills. The position is 100% fixed-term, funded for 4 years, with a competitive salary (CHF 50,042 in year 1 to CHF 53,263 in year 4), plus travel, publication, and computing support. Additional benefits include child allowance, maternity/paternity leave, visa assistance, mentorship, career advice, and teaching opportunities.
Location: Bern, Switzerland. Start date: 1 February 2027. Applications are reviewed immediately and accepted until the position is filled.
