About this position
PhD position at the University of Bern in the Centre for Space and Habitability / Division for Space Research and Planetary Sciences within the new NCCR Genesis research infrastructure.
The project focuses on astrobiology and life detection, specifically combining remote sensing via circular spectro-polarimetry with in situ laser-based mass spectrometry to detect biosignatures. The research is highly interdisciplinary and connects physics, chemistry, biology, microbiology, and planetary sciences.
Work will mainly involve laboratory experiments with cell cultures, anaerobic cultivation of microorganisms, and organic molecules relevant to Solar System environments, complemented by targeted field measurements of soil material containing microorganisms and low-abundant organics. The results are intended to inform future life-detection missions, including ESA’s planned L4 mission to Enceladus and future NASA missions to Mars.
The successful candidate will join an interdisciplinary team with expertise spanning astrophysics, microbiology, biomedicine, and engineering, and will gain experience in dual-use instrumentation relevant to both space exploration and medical diagnostics.
Eligibility: MSc degree in physics, chemistry, or biology; willingness to learn microbiological techniques; prior wet lab experience is an asset; no prior optics expertise required; basic knowledge of polarization, vacuum technology, and/or mass spectrometry is a plus; strong English communication skills required.
