About this position

PhD opportunity at the University of Greenwich (Business School) on renewable energy, local value creation, and economic resilience in Europe.

This project investigates how renewable energy expansion can support regional prosperity by retaining investment, revenues, jobs, and economic activity within local and regional economies. It focuses on the economic, social, and fiscal impacts of solar photovoltaics, wind energy, renewable heat systems, energy storage technologies, and energy communities across Europe.

The research is grounded in political economy, regional development, economic geography, and energy transition scholarship. Key themes include ownership structures, governance arrangements, labour market institutions, public policy choices, municipal revenues, local supply chains, public investment capacity, energy poverty, affordability, price stability, and energy security.

The project will compare different European regions and municipalities pursuing distinct renewable energy pathways, with particular attention to public, municipal, cooperative, community, and private ownership models. Methodologically, it combines quantitative analysis with qualitative case studies, policy analysis, and interviews with trade unions, local authorities, policymakers, energy providers, and community organisations.

The PhD is undertaken in partnership with younion (Austria's largest public service trade union), and the collaboration is intended to support field access and policy impact throughout the research process.

Funding: competition-funded PhD project. The bursary is £23,805 in Year 1 (UKRI 2026-27 standard rate including London Weighting), with Years 2 and 3 funded in line with the relevant UKRI rate. The scholarship also contributes tuition fees at the university Home rate; international applicants must pay the remaining fee difference.

Eligibility: open to students worldwide. Applicants should be prepared for mixed-methods research and policy-oriented work on renewable energy and regional economic development.

How to apply: register your interest via the FindAPhD listing. The university will respond directly after submission.

Deadline: 23 August 2026.
