About this position
ETH Zurich is inviting applications for a fully funded PhD position in the Sensing, Interaction & Perception Lab at the intersection of robotics, wearable sensing, signal processing, machine learning, human-computer interaction, and egocentric vision.
The project focuses on developing neuromotor interfaces for dexterous robot teleoperation. The main sensing modality is surface electromyography (sEMG) from the wrist or forearm to decode subtle hand and finger activity, continuous movement, and motor intent in real time. A second component explores egocentric vision as a complementary modality to capture scene context, manipulated objects, hand-object interactions, and task state.
Research topics include multimodal learning, temporal modeling, representation learning, adaptation, real-time inference, and reasoning across neuromotor and visual signals. The work also connects to Mixed Reality, dexterous manipulation, shared autonomy, multimodal intent inference, and human-robot interaction.
Eligibility highlights: an excellent master's degree in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field; fluent written and spoken English; strong machine learning, signal processing, and programming skills; and interest in building real-time sensing and interactive systems. Helpful experience includes EMG or other biosignals, wearable sensing, embedded systems, robotics, egocentric vision, computer vision, or multimodal learning.
Funding: the position is fully funded. The post does not mention a scholarship programme or any fee waiver.
Application: apply through the ETH Zurich online portal with a motivation letter, CV, bachelor’s and master’s transcripts, and 1–2 academic references. Optional GitHub/portfolio links may be added. Applications are reviewed on a rolling basis until the position is filled. Earliest start: Fall 2026.
Location: ETH Zurich, Switzerland.

What's required
Applicants must have written and spoken fluency in English and an excellent master's degree (MSc., M.Eng. or equivalent) in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field. Strong foundations are expected in machine learning (classification, regression, evaluation, representation learning, generalization), signals and time-series analysis (sampling, frequency, phase, noise, spectral representations, filtering), and programming with quantitative evaluation. Interest in real-time sensing and interactive systems with physical sensors is important. Beneficial backgrounds include EMG or other electrophysiological signals, sensor systems, embedded systems, electronics, wearable sensing, robotics, egocentric vision, multimodal learning, domain adaptation, HCI, Mixed Reality, or wearable computing.
How to apply
Submit the complete application through the online application portal. Include a motivation letter, CV, university transcripts for bachelor's and master's degrees, and contact details for 1–2 academic references. Optional GitHub or portfolio links may also be included.
