About this position

PhD opportunity at Aston University in AI-driven robotic disassembly using mixed reality and haptics, based in the Autonomous Robotics and Perception Laboratory within the School of Computer Science and Digital Technologies.

This funded PhD project focuses on robotics, artificial intelligence, mixed reality, haptic teleoperation, human-robot interaction, learning from demonstration, adaptive autonomy, and multimodal perception. The research aims to build next-generation robotic systems for complex industrial manipulation and disassembly tasks such as EV battery disassembly, remanufacturing, and resource recovery.

The successful candidate will investigate human-in-the-loop robotic learning, intent recognition, reinforcement learning, digital twins, sim-to-real transfer, and safe autonomous operation under uncertainty. The lab offers access to collaborative robot arms, industrial robotic platforms, advanced sensing and vision systems, haptic devices, mixed reality technologies, mobile robots, and high-performance computing resources.

Supervision: Dr Alireza Rastegarpanah (Primary Supervisor) and Professor Jose M Alcaraz Calero (Associate Supervisor).

Funding: The project includes a bursary covering home or international tuition fees. Students must fund their own living costs.

Eligibility: Applicants should have a relevant degree in Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline, with strong programming skills in Python and/or C++, ROS/ROS2 experience, and knowledge of robotics, machine learning, and control. Desirable experience includes simulation, teleoperation, haptics, computer vision, and mixed reality.

What's required

Applicants should have, or expect to achieve, a relevant bachelor's degree with First Class or 2.1, or a relevant bachelor's degree with First Class or 2.1 plus a master's degree with Merit or higher. Equivalent international qualifications accepted by Aston University may be eligible. Required background includes Robotics, Mechatronics, Computer Science, Artificial Intelligence, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a closely related discipline. Strong Python and/or C++ programming skills, knowledge of robotics and autonomous systems, robot manipulation and motion planning, experience with ROS and/or ROS2, and familiarity with machine learning, deep learning, reinforcement learning, or learning from demonstration are expected. Knowledge of robot kinematics, dynamics, control, and trajectory planning is also required. Desirable experience includes simulation tools, teleoperation, shared autonomy, human-robot interaction, haptics, computer vision, multimodal perception, sensor fusion, mixed reality/VR/XR, digital twins, real hardware validation, and prior research experience.
