About this position
PhD opening in Safe AI-based Control at Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e), Department of Mechanical Engineering, within the Control Systems Technology group.
The project sits at the intersection of machine learning, control theory, and safety-critical systems. The successful candidate will develop methods for the analysis, verification, and design of neural-network-based controllers with safety- and stability-by-design guarantees. Research directions mentioned include control barrier functions, Lyapunov functions, quadratic constraints, semidefinite programming, and neural architectures with intrinsic robustness or stability properties.
The work will be carried out in an open, collaborative research environment with expertise in data-driven modelling, control of complex and uncertain systems, motion control, model predictive control, networked and supervisory control, neuromorphic control, cyber-physical systems, and optimization. The project also emphasizes applications in robotics, motion control, and energy systems.
Eligibility highlights: a master’s degree or equivalent in Systems and Control, Control Engineering, Engineering Cybernetics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechatronics, Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related field; strong interest in control and machine learning; mathematically rigorous and research-oriented mindset; ability to work independently and in interdisciplinary teams; willingness to develop teaching and coaching skills; and fluent English at C1 level.
Funding and conditions: full-time employment for four years, with an intermediate assessment after nine months. Salary is scale P, about €3,204–€4,051 gross per month (full-time), plus holiday allowance and year-end bonus. TU/e also mentions pension, training, commuting/work-from-home/internet allowances, and other employment benefits.
