About this position

PhD opportunity at Quadram Institute Bioscience within the Norwich Research Park Biosciences Doctoral Training Programme (NRPDTP).

This project asks: Where does Salmonella hide? The research will use organ-on-chip technology and comparative infection models to study persistent Salmonella infection and host colonisation. You will investigate intestinal, hepatic, immune, and gallbladder niches using static cell culture systems and more advanced dynamic microphysiological models.

The project combines bacterial genomics, host-pathogen biology, microbiology, cell biology, molecular biology, high-resolution imaging, and computational/experimental infection biology. It is designed for students interested in infection mechanisms, persistence, and advanced in vitro models.

Supervision is provided by Dr G Langridge and Dr Aimée Parker. The post is based at the Quadram Institute on the Norwich Research Park in the United Kingdom, with access to a vibrant interdisciplinary research community and state-of-the-art facilities.

Funding is fully funded for 4 years and includes tuition fees, an annual stipend, a Research Training Support Grant, and a funded three-month professional internship placement. Entry requires at least a UK equivalent Bachelor’s (Honours) 2:1 and IELTS 6.5 overall with 6.0 in each category (or equivalent).

The project is shortlisted for funding by the NRPDTP. Start date is 1 October 2027. Shortlisted applicants will be interviewed on 2–4 February 2027. Interested candidates should review the NRPDTP eligibility and application guidance and register interest via the FindAPhD listing.
