About this position

PhD opportunity at Naturalis Biodiversity Center in Leiden, Netherlands, focused on shelled zooplankton (pteropods) and their role in the biological carbon pump in a changing Arctic Ocean.

The project is part of C-CONNECT, an international collaboration involving Naturalis, the University of Amsterdam, the Royal Netherlands Institute for Sea Research (NIOZ), and the German Alfred-Wegener Institute (AWI). Research will combine Arctic expeditions, depth-stratified sampling, long-term ecological observatory samples from HAUSGARTEN, and state-of-the-art morphological and molecular methods to study carbon fluxes and the ecology of current and past pteropod populations.

Applicants should have a completed Master’s degree in a relevant field such as biology, oceanography, or molecular ecology. Experience with DNA barcoding, metabarcoding, oceanographic sampling, statistics, and R is desirable, and strong English proficiency is required.

The position is funded by NWO. It offers a full-time contract with a gross monthly starting salary of €3,567, initially for one year and extendable by three years after successful evaluation.

Apply by 2026-10-29 via AcademicTransfer with a CV, motivation letter, and two referees. Contact Dr. Katja Peijnenburg at Naturalis for position questions, or the HR team for application procedure questions.
