The project aims to advance the use of simulation and experimental modelling to optimise building performance, specifically targeting user health, comfort, and environmental sustainability. By systematically exploring how various housing design parameters impact health and comfort indicators through building performance simulations, the research will contribute to the development of robust computational building physics methods and practical design guidelines.

Key objectives include establishing reliable validation methods for simulation results, broadening the scope of comfort standards in simulations, and integrating data-driven approaches into architectural design. The project will culminate in a decision-support framework to assist designers and policymakers in creating healthier and more sustainable buildings. Students will gain expertise in simulation tools, optimisation algorithms, and multi-objective decision-making, enabling them to evaluate and compare alternative building design scenarios at early stages. The research will also produce a comprehensive set of design guides supported by simulation and experimental evidence.

Applicants should hold a UK 2:1 honours degree or its international equivalent in architecture or architectural engineering.
